WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY CHIMNEY CLEANED BY PROFESSIONAL- 

1.To ensure that the fireplace vents properly to the outdoors.

2.To prevent chimney fires.

3.To reduce or eliminate chimney odors.

4.To remove blockages that could cause dangerous carbon monoxide gases to enter your home.

5.To prevent detrition of the chimney interior caused by acids in the deposits.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY FIREPLACE CLEANED AND INSPECTED?

Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulation of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that a chimney be inspected at least once a year. The cleaning frequency will depend on the amount of use, types of fires you burn and types of wood used.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOOT AND CREOSOTE?

Soot- Primarily composed of carbon particles but may also contain ash. It's typically black or brown. Soot can be flammable depending on how concentrated the soot to ash mixture is.

Creosote- Combustible deposits in the vent system, a byproduct of incomplete combustion. It is hard and can be black or brown deposits can be curly, flaky, or fluffy looking. Once it becomes glazed typically a shiny tar looking substance that is when it becomes at the most dangerous and the highest of flammability it has.
